24th June - 6th July Danielle Pinet & Jose Garcia Negrette 1 + 1 = DOS Architects Explore Language of Art in Mary Place Exhibition Danielle Pinet and Jose Garcia Negrette include themselves in the tradition of architects who paint or have painted in parallel to their architecture work. Two of the most significant ones being Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. Le Corbusier said to have arrived at his forms through painting and sculpting and that for him this daily activity was more important than his architecture. Both were born in Latin America while having a combination of Spanish and French backgrounds. Jose was born in Cuba and studied Architecture in Australia. Danielle was born in Uruguay and studied Architecture in Italy and the US before coming to Australia. Danielle’s works are abstract landscapes, the latest ones mostly using plywood and wood remnants to create an exploration of painting and relief and the idea of building something which is painted in the process. They involve a search for ways of creating patterns invoking ideas of light, movement, rhythm, and joy. Geometry, proportions and colour being the means of communication. The painters of the Bauhaus and Arte Povera are two significant influences. In 2005 Danielle curated the exhibition “In the Soul of the Architect” in which 29 architects, including Jose and herself, showed their paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery and photography. Jose’s work combines painting and drawing on paper which has figurative and abstract elements created through time producing a layering effect. There is a strong sense of landscape and space attached to the work with either a presence of a human figure or a more subdued image overtaken by the surrounding landscape. This sense of layering created at different time frames, evokes a sense of memory from previous drawings which appears as fragments in later works. This fragmentation brings together the human body, space and memory.
