‘Counterfeit’
Artist draws on life experience for provocative second show…
Sexual exploitation, female idealism, repression, age, beauty and role playing all play their own important role in new photographic works released by artist Tanya Linney in her latest exhibition, Counterfeit.  The exhibition, at Mary Place Gallery from 2 – 8 June is reflective of Linney’s experience as both a model and a woman.
Counterfeit explores the notion of reality. Linney photographs dolls and mannequins in real life situations to create a social commentary around the culturally accepted norms of body image and the celebrity obsession within society.
Works including fake hair, stockings, coat hangers, makeup, ropes, plastic bags, masks, food and money are arranged and then shot under bright, colourful and opaque lighting. The effect created enables Linney to emphasise darker issues in a surreal, almost ironic way.
Linney’s mannequins investigate authenticity in today’s society of pop culture and perfection. The photographs expose the anxieties faced by women who are programmed to choose impossible proportions both physically and psychologically every day of their life.
Works range from the disturbing to somewhat comical, including the ‘Alex’ series conveying the disjointed side of youth to the perfect family portrait of dolls raising questions around ideology and elitism.
Tanya Linney began shooting still lifes in 2004 following her graduation from The School of Colour and Design in Sydney Australia. After 15 years of travelling internationally as a fashion model, the 30 year old Western Australian discovered a love of drawing, photography, scraffito and collage while living in Paris leading her to embark on a creative journey using issues that confronted her as an adolescent.

Her first exhibition, ‘Flasher’ was held at Blank Space, Surry Hills Sydney in 2004 and was extremely well received by her critics and peers. Linney has collaborated with leading designers including Kirrily Johnston, Sass and Bide and Ksubi on various fashion meets art projects that have been shown around Australia and New York City.

Mark Hanham

Andrew Crawford Gallery exhibits new paintings by

MARK HANHAM

18th – 27th April 2008, 10am – 6pm Daily

Mark Hanham’s spontaneous, exuberant paintings depict an intellectual understanding of the fragility and mania of life on the street, with isolated and anonymous figures confronting their sometimes bleak, sometimes beautiful urban existence. His large, frenzied, but highly structured paintings reveal a deep understanding of the ambivalence of the chaos, the rush, the isolation and the alienation of city life.
Mark painted a striking portrait of Oscar award winning cinematographer Jim Frazier which featured on the Ray Martin show. He was chosen for the prestigious Sulman Prize in 2003 and was the People’s Choice for the Paddington Art Prize in 2004. His large and complex paintings have been sold successfully in Sydney and the universality of his preoccupations will ensure he gains continued enthusiastic attention in the national and global art market.
Mark has just returned from a year in Sweden at the invitation of art dealer Andrew Crawford for this solo show at Mary Place Gallery.
The Paris, London and Sweden trip was a great experience for the local eastern suburbs artist who innately is influenced by a European point of view.

Seven

SEVEN is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by a group of artists whose work is linked by a concern with the unconscious.  This exhibition is an opportunity to witness the work of seven artists who share a studio, resulting in parallels between styles, concepts and technique. The seven artists, Carole Corrie, Adrienne Overall, Amy Jones, Lisa Cotton, Richard Magee, Elizabeth Foster and Sandra Kiris pursue individual themes, however, their paintings are united in that they explore the meta-physical realm of chance, enigma and intuition. The group shares an interest in the theories of Modernism by demonstrating an understanding of abstraction, flatness and the grid as a starting point to situate their responses to both natural and internal worlds.

Artists wade into the water debate

If modern art is the panacea for the ills of modern life, then this group show should be compulsory viewing.

WATERmark is an exhibition by a diverse group of artists across a variety of media responding to the theme of water.  Graduates of the National Art School, many have exhibited their work for a number of years. All offer works demonstrating great variety. .

WATERmark is about artists engaging in the debate about this increasingly serious global issue.

Ranging from sublime, personal meditations on this precious resource to broader statements about the dilemma now facing the planet and everyone on it, this show reaffirms the relevance of the visual arts in contemporary life.

WATERmark runs for two weeks - works on paper and ceramics shown in the first week; paintings and sculpture in the second week.

I am interested in the figure and its relationship with the environment. My work seeks to capture the still, sometimes contemplative moments that exist in the solitude of an everyday activity. This series of work shows the figure around the seaside pool, an environment that is familiar and important to me. I prefer painting with oil paints on board and enjoy the richness of the paint texture and working with a limited palette.

"Thus spoke Zarathustra"

My painting subjects are always about human emotions,  expessed in figurative to abstract paintings. The current work is about literature. Thus spoke Zarathustra by the German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is taken as base for my paintings.

In the series of paintings  I am creating  at the moment, each painting is related to one particular chapter of part 4 in the book.

Statement wall sculptures

This is my little protest to the way our society seems to discard pieces of workmanship without a second thought. By reusing discarded materials I tried to highlight the intrinsic beauty of human endeavours.

Statement paintings

Living in the Inner West of Sydney means to be surrounded by a million things that clang and clash. Look closer and one sees a colourful and eclectic mix of elements that reflects the different cultures and subcultures that inhabit it. These works are an attempt to express visually what one feels with all the senses.

As the Impressionist's might capture a fleeting moment in painting light, I find the essence of nature in the depths of shadows.

The colour and texture observed in the shadows and patterns of nature reveal a certain rhythm. In transcribing this rhythmical beat I feel closer to nature.

Of late, escarpments are of particular interest to me. They are nature at the edge. It is nature in all its ambiguity. They exhibit aspects of what is below the earth's surface and what is above, what is past and present. No moment on an escarpment is ever the same. I find myself frequently returning to them.

Palya Art at Mary Place
Press Release

Mary Place Gallery
12 Mary Place (off Brown Street) Paddington NSW 2021.
Opening 3rd March concluding 3rd April. Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm
or by appointment.
Palya Art, in association with Didgeri Air Art Tours, presents a chance to see the best of recent artworks from artist owned indigenous art centres in Kimberley, Arnhem Land and the Central Desert, including the communities of Haast's Bluff, Yuendumu, Kintore & Kiwirrkurra, Balgo Hills, Bidyadanga, Fitzroy Crossing, East Kimberley, Tiwi Islands,
Maningrida, Ramingining, Elcho Island, Tennant Creek and Utopia.

These artworks have been recentlyselected by Helen Read, Director of Palya Art and Didgeri Air Art Tours, who will be in attendance to discuss art tours to visit artists on their land, and to share her unique insights gained from over 20 years of working with, and for, people in remote indigenous communities. Helen Read is a pilot who met many of the painters as a nursing sister before returning to her previous world of art.

"What an enormous privilege it has been getting to know people as I worked and lived in the new homeland communities. Aboriginal friends ‘grew me up', explaining familial, totemic and physical connectedness," says Helen Read.

Registered in 1986, Didgeri Air Art Tours flies visitors from Australia and abroad to remote communities to meet the Traditional Owners and creators of artworks now receiving world attention.

Helen's established relationships with artists and communities continues to facilitate a unique and often profound experience for visitors on her tours, and ensures that work of outstanding quality will be evident at this exhibition at Mary Place.

Palya Art, (a Pintupi word for good and a greeting) was established after frequent requests for Helen to select artworks for private and public collections. "The beauty, force and diversity of artwork I have collected for this exhibition is as vibrant and strong as ever." Helen Read.

DAVID SKINNER

BIOGRAPHY

David Skinner studied painting at the National Art School, East Sydney, in the late 1960s. After graduating he moved to South Australia where he furthered his training at the South Australian School of Art. This training formed the groundwork for the flourishing career which followed.

In the 1970s he was a founding member of Adelaide's Roundspace Studio, a collective of local emerging artists. During his time there he regularly participated in shared exhibitions.

After returning to Sydney in the 1980s David moved into illustration and animation, working on a wide range of major international and national projects for the next 20 years.

David Skinner now returns to his first love, painting, where he can really express and utilise his creative energies. He is a realist painter whose work reflects a unique quality of interpretation and vibrancy.

A range of Skinner's work is represented in private and corporate collections around Australia.

Test Cricket and Aboriginal Women - Iconic Australian Images

Mary Place Gallery is presenting a unique dual exhibition: a series of iconic images symbolizing Australia's love of sport, and a collection of portraits of Australian  identities who have had a significant impact on Australian culture.

The exhibition combines the works of two talented Sydney artists. In ‘Test', David Skinner has interpreted a range of cricket images in oils on canvas, while Glenda Jones has produced portraits of Aboriginal men and women who have influenced us during the last 15 years in ‘Larger Than Life' - Portraits 1990-2006.

Test', presents a range of images of one of Australia's most famous Ashes victories. Each painting is based on photographic work taken from the television images transmitted during the games: This formed the basis for each of the painting's development. David Skinner explained that "using these elements has enabled me to produce images of the game removed from the one normally associated with the traditional memory of a test match".

For Larger Than Life - Portraits 1990-2006, Glenda has drawn on a wide range of intriguing and outstanding individuals, who have achieved so much for the country, their community and our shared history.  The range of identities include: Nova Peris-Kneebone, Kyle Vander Kype and Pat O'Shane.

"This exhibition is a celebration of women and men who have retained a sense of purpose against all odds", Glenda Jones said.

Linda Burney MLA, will open the exhibition on the evening of the 13th.

The exhibition will be from 13th to the 24th of February, 2007, at the Mary Place Gallery, 12 Mary Place, Paddington.

ATHENA X "TRANSITIONS"

MEDIA RELEASE

Upcoming artist and National Art School graduate, Athena X, is launching her first solo exhibition - TRANSITIONS - The masked face beyond spirit. The event will be held on 31 January 2007 at Mary Gallery from 7pm.

Inspired by the essence of life and the human soul, Athena's exhibition explores the metaphysical world through a visual, emotional and spiritual journey.

"I've been exploring the human soul's evolution for the past 3 years, drawing inspiration from life experiences, people I've met, research and studies on reincarnation.  With my series of paintings I aim to capture the soul's path to growth and maturity ... and I do this by making extensive use of the layering technique to symbolise the many possible reincarnations a soul may have." explains Athena X.

Athena's interesting use of colours, gold and metallic conveys a hypnotising effect to the whole exhibition. Her use of symbolic elements such as olive branches feature unexpectedly and delightfully in her artwork, revealing her strong Greek heritage.

"To complete each artwork, I have placed each painting in a gilded frame. I wanted my art to bear a sense of museum-like feel and preciousness. And most of all, I truly wanted the viewer to appreciate the fundamental relationship between the present and our past... who we are today, as a result of our past." explains Athena.

She concludes "My paintings are intended to not only be conceptually indulgent, but also visually beautiful and exiting to look at, challenging the viewer to see something different every time."
